Great photos from Kiev.  Founded in 482 AD, Kiev, the capital of Ukraine straddles the Dnieper River. This cosmopolitan city numbers 3 million souls. The country was previously part of the Soviet Union until its independence in 1991. Ukraine has been the site of several revolutions in the recent past including the Orange and EuroMaidan Revolution. There is a struggle whether Ukraine will be part of Europe or revert to being in the Soviet galaxy.

Kiev is a fantastic city to explore, whether by foot or the extensive metro. One of the first stops should be Kiev Pechersk Lavra. This UNESCO church and monastery was founded in 1077 and is considered one of the holiest places in the former Soviet Union.

There are other historic and beautiful churches in Kiev. Another UNESCO site is the 11th century church, St Sophia’s Cathedral.  There is also a fantastic view from the bell tower.

Also, stop by the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery a 12th century church. It was destroyed by the Soviet Union and rebuilt in 1997-98. It is still a working monastery.

Another must-see is Maidan Square, the heart of Kiev. This central meeting place has been home to well-known revolutions. Today, it is a great place to relax, drink a coffee or have an ice cream cone.

Kiev was part of the Soviet Union for decades. It is easy to see glimpses of its communist past.  Try and find the Soviet star or the sickle and hammer.
